Today’s Groninger Markttag (Groningen Market Day), which takes place once a year for one day, is a special one for locals and tens of thousands of German visitors. Many German tourists take advantage of the national holiday Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Day of German Unity) to visit the market, experience local traditions, try regional foods, and discover unique crafts.
The public holiday, which marks Germany’s reunification, gives Germans a chance to travel to Groningen, since many institutions, including shops and schools in their country are closed. The seven markets on the Groningen Market Day provide an unique opportunity for visitors to explore.
The northern German border is about 50 kilometers from Groningen, making it easy for many Germans to visit the city during this holiday. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) estimated that in 2023 more than seven million Germans visited the Netherlands.
Organizers of Groningen Market Day shared that they strive to offer a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, especially those from Germany. The city center transformes into a lively hub with over 250 exhibitors offering a mix of goods from antiques to handmade products.
Traditions That Bring Families Together
For many Germans, the market offers a chance to make new memories together as a family just across the border. “It’s not just the market itself, but also the atmosphere. The Dutch hospitality makes a visit here really enjoyable,” says Tamara Möller from Hamburg, as she browses a stand selling antique books.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to spend a day out as a family,” Tamara explains. She and her husband, along with their daughter, made the three-and-a-half-hour drive from Hamburg early in the morning to explore the marketplace. Over the years, this trip has become a family tradition.
“We come to the Groninger Market Day every year, and we start looking forward to it in July already,” she adds.
Celebrating Community and Togetherness
The market offers more than shopping: it serves as a platform for exchange. The diverse crowd at the market fosters interaction between tourists and local residents. As people from various backgrounds come together to enjoy the festivities, they share experiences, stories, and insights, enriching the overall atmosphere of the event.
“I've met many interesting people here who share their stories,” says Daniel Kroll from Vechta, Germany, almost a two-hour drive from Groningen. He recounts a conversation with a vendor specializing in rare vinyl records. “It’s incredible how music can connect people and spark conversations that go beyond just buying and selling,” he explains.
Culinary offerings are another major highlight for many German visitors like Daniel. The market features a wide offer of local foods, tempting people to sample new dishes. “I tried real Dutch poffertjes [a traditional Dutch batter cake] in the city for the first time today,” he shares. “You won't find poffertjes in Germany that taste as good as these,” he exclaimed.
Groningen Market Day remains an annual highlight in the city's social calendar and an important event for exchange between Germany and the Netherlands. Visitors, whether local or international, can enjoy the warm atmosphere, discover new flavours and create memories together.
