It is only two days until Groningen’s Vismarkt again turns into the Northern Netherlands' largest one-day market. With tents being erected, cars unloading goods, and booths taking shape, preparations are already in full swing.
On October 3, 2024, the highly anticipated Groninger Market Day will transform the historic city center into a bustling marketplace, attracting thousands of visitors from near and far. Featuring seven distinct markets, food trucks, live music, and entertainment for children, this vibrant event promises something for everyone.
A Busy Marketplace
The event’s seven markets, with hundreds of exhibitors, cater to a wide range of interests—from retro treasures and unique handmade crafts at the Vintage Market to fresh Northern Dutch seafood at the many food stalls.

“Each year, we try to bring something new to keep the market exciting,” says Paul Van Put, one of the event’s lead organizers. “This year’s addition of the Lifestyle & Brocante Market offers a fresh experience for those looking for a broad selection of vinyl records and literature, along with clothing, accessories, and stylish vintage home goods.”
A Feast for the Senses
While the markets are the centerpiece of the event, Groninger Market Day offers much more. Food trucks serving local and international fare will be stationed throughout the city, ensuring that visitors can indulge in a variety of culinary delights.
“Imagine a day off in the streets of a city like Groningen, with its bustling alleyways filled with people, stalls brimming with goodies, and stages where you can listen to singer-songwriters and small bands,” says Van Put “You don’t even need to spend much to attend. There will be delicious food at reasonable prices—it's worth being there for the festival vibe alone.”
An International Celebration
Now in its third edition after the pandemic, Groninger Market Day attracts crowds not only from the region but also from neighboring Germany, where October 3 is celebrated as the Day of German Unity, which commemorates the anniversary of German reunification, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The timing makes Groninger Market Day a popular destination for German visitors, adding an international flair to the event.
“As it’s a day off in Germany and all shops are closed, we are more than happy to make Groninger Market Day the perfect occasion for a city break,” says van Put.
Bringing People Together
While Groningen Market continues to grow in size, welcoming new exhibitors each year, it remains first and foremost an initiative for the sake of the community. “Every year, this market strengthens our neighborhoods and becomes the heartbeat of the community,” says Mark Engberts, a spokesperson for the Groningen City Club, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s not just a market to buy fresh food and handmade goods. It’s a way to bring liveliness to the city center. People enjoy wandering along the stalls, buying, and eating together.”
Groninger Market Day will run from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. and it is free to enter.
