Germany is facing a groundbreaking election: on February 23, 2025, the country will decide on its new government - and the forecasts paint a worrying picture. The ruling “traffic light” coalition of Social Democrats, Greens, and Liberals has failed, while right-wing parties, above all the AfD (Alternative for Germany), are gaining massive support. The AfD, classified as far-right by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, could become stronger than ever before. A shift to the right in Europe's largest economy would have far-reaching consequences - for the EU, the global democratic landscape, and the handling of migration, climate protection, and international alliances.
