According to a  2022 PISA report, literacy rates of residents of the Netherlands have been steadily decreasing since 2012. In order to combat this trend, Groningen’s municipality and partner organizations have implemented regional and municipal initiatives.

Last week, Groningen’s municipality announced their low literacy rate action plan for 2025-2027, which stated that the Dutch government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science has decided to reduce the annual funding for the program from 25 million euros to 12.9 million euros starting in 2025.

The Glass Room reporter Sophia von Seebach speaks with a volunteer at Humanitas, one of the municipality’s partner organizations, about what initiatives they have implemented to battle illiteracy.
