New data from the European Union’s statistics agency, Eurostat, shows that Dutch shoppers made more online purchases per capita than anywhere in Europe. People in the Netherlands were 20% more likely to shop online than neighbouring Germany and 45% more likely to do so than Italy.

The Dutch province of Utrecht reported over 87% of people made an online purchase in 2024, the highest of anywhere in Europe. All Dutch provinces, bar Zeeland on 79.5%, broke the 80% mark.

Our reporter, Jacques Malherbe, spoke to Dutch consumers and businesses to dig into this phenomenon.
